An open letter to the New York Post and other media

 

     Welcome to the website for the National Federation of the Blind of New York State.  As with almost everything on the internet today, this Web site is now and we hope will continue to be, a work in progress.  We, in the National Federation of the Blind, want to share the truth about blindness with as many people both blind and sighted as possible.  It is our belief that blindness in itself is simply one of many characteristics which go into a person’s other makeup. 

 

     Throughout our history, the National Federation of the Blind has striven to change the attitudes blind people have about themselves and that society has about us in general.  For the most part, things are substantially better today for blind people than they were in 1940 when the Federation was founded.  However, full participation in society is not yet a reality.  To this end, we continue to work with blind people, parents of blind children, private agencies for the blind, private sector employers, the state rehabilitation system, government departments and any other body which might have influence over or contact with blind people. 

 

     I invite you to browse our Web site and learn the truth about blindness for yourself.  Take advantage of what we offer and take advantage of the other links provided to go to other sites, which offer even more information about blindness.  We welcome the support of everyone as together we change what it means to be blind.
