ANNOUNCING! OUR 56th ANNUAL STATE CONVENTION

If you are a blind person, related to a blind person, a professional in the field of work with the blind, or simply interested in the future of blind people in New York and the world read on.  The National Federation of the Blind of New York State will hold its 56th annual convention over the weekend of November 9-11 at the Crowne Plaza, 66 Hale Avenue, White Plains, NY  10601.

The convention will begin on Friday with a town meeting held by The Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped.  Commission officials will be available to hear from the public regarding their opinions of services to the blind in our state.  There will be an all day seminar for blind children and their parents (see attached flyer for details). A meeting to develop advocacy skills and a discussion on the unique opportunities and challenges facing blind students will be conducted by our Student Division.  There will also be a workshop featuring accessible cell phones.

All day Friday there will be exhibits of technology and products for blind people of all ages. A meeting of the Board of Directors of the affiliate, to which all are invited, will follow at 3 pm.  On Friday evening, a reception will be held to welcome all attendees.  There will also be an opportunity to see a Broadway show and have dinner in midtown. Tickets are limited, first come, first served.

Saturday will see us engaged in discussing all aspects of life for blind people in our society.  Government officials, professionals in the field, vendors of technology and many others will present on topics reaching every member of the audience.  In addition, we enthusiastically welcome Ron Brown, 2nd Vice President of the National Federation of the Blind and president of our Illinois Affiliate.  Ron is a business owner and an orientation and mobility instructor and will bring to our convention a unique perspective on life as a blind person today.  On Sunday we will hold our annual business meeting and it is there that we will chart our course for the coming year.

Please look over the enclosed registration materials, including the scholarship letter and application, and remember to make your hotel reservations directly with the Crowne Plaza.  Looking forward to seeing you on the skin of the Big Apple!
